Coinbase Wins at Supreme Court as Ruling Backs Arbitration | Yahoo News

Case: Coinbase, Inc. v. Bielski (June 23, 2023)

The Supreme Court, in a split 5-4 decision ruled in favor of Coinbase and the right for companies to enter into arbitration.  Arbitration is frequently used and highly favored by companies because it is cheaper and generally more efficient. The Court emphasized these benefits of arbitration (among others) and noted the benefits would be stripped if the district courts were allowed to proceedThe Court relied on Congressional principles and the Griggs principle, holding that “an appeal, divests the district court of its control over those aspects of the case involved in the appeal.”  This case can be seen as a win for companies across the U.S. who favor arbitration over traditional litigation.

The Supreme Court over the past two decades has bolstered the power of companies to enforce arbitration clauses with consumers and employees. Those rulings have cited the 1925 Federal Arbitration Act, which says courts must enforce arbitration accords the same as any other contract.
